Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for service and handover plant and machines
   • Access, interpret and apply all service and maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the work activity
   • Obtain permits required to carry out work from authorised personnel
   • Identify and obtain replacement parts and service tools
   • Inspect working area to determine appropriate path of movement for loads and equipment/vehicles
   • Maintain cleanliness of the servicing area
2. Assess and secure plant/machine
   • Conduct external checks of plant/machine
   • Secure plant/machine and inspect attachments for defects
   • Carry out pre-operational and post start-up equipment checks
   • Report defects and damage
3. Service, maintain and repair plant/machine
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Operate service/maintenance equipment
   • Conduct servicing or maintenance of plant/machine
   • Apply procedures for the disposal of used oil and lubricant
   • Maintain servicing schedule and/or records
4. Test plant/machine operational functions under load
   • Ensure safety of personnel and avoidance of damage to plant/machine and environment while testing the plant/machine under load
   • Shift material using appropriate equipment
   • Assess weight of test load in compliance with equipment load plate specifications
   • Apply control levers to ensure safe and effective operation of equipment
   • Maintain speed of machine to safe operating and site limits
   • Place test load to ensure stability of materials
   • Identify and respond to hazardous and emergency situations
5. Shutdown plant/machine and secure site
   • Park plant/machine to avoid machine and site hazards
   • Conduct shut-down and isolate vehicle
   • Return plant/machine to service
   • Complete post-operational checks and handover documentation

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient servicing and handing over plant and machines including:

organisation and site requirements and procedures

attachment securing procedures

hazard identification procedures and risk control

appropriate equipment

lever controls safely and effectively

and securing plant and machinery

operational functions under load

shut down of equipment and securing the site

works effectively with others to service and handover plant and machines that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of servicing and handing over plant and machines that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

planning and preparing

obtaining the required permits

obtaining replacement parts and service tools

conducting external checks of plant/machine

securing plant/machine

inspecting attachments for defects

carrying out equipment checks

conducting servicing or maintenance of plant/machine

post-maintenance testing of plant and machines

shut-down and isolate vehicle

completing post-operational checks and handover documentation

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in servicing and handover plant and machines through:

identifying and applying test load parameters
